Avery was born in 1901 in St. Louis, Mo. After his discharge from the U.S. Army during World War II, he was employed as a machinist at General Dynamics for over 25 years. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Lodge 776, Fort Worth, Tex.
